MOGADISHU, Somalia – Egyptian jihadist identified as Abu Anas Al-Misri has been shot and killed by Al Shabaab fighters in a mosque on Sunday in Jilib town south of Somalia.

Al-Misri was killed after he rejected to surrender and pulled a hand grenade as Al-Shabaab militants tried to detain him for being “Anti-Al-Shabaab”, a source said.

He says Al-Misri was suspected to have links with Islamic State in Somalia.

The Al Qaeda inspired group Al-Shabaab is conducting what appears to be another purge against foreign fighters – at least one believed to be Egyptian jihadist killed in Jilib, a source, who asked to be anonymous said.

He says the group’s fighters also detained other fighters, including a man identified as “Moallim Daud”, a former Da’wa chief in Gedo region.

He added Al-Shabaab conducted an operation in Jilib and other towns such as Saakow aimed at arresting members suspected of having links with Islamic State.

There was no immediate comment from Al Shabaab over the claims.

The Al Qaeda linked group Al Shabaab, which once controlled much of the capital of Mogadishu in 2011, wants to topple the weak-western backed government of Somalia.
