MOGADISHU –Two little sisters have died after undergoing female genital mutilation in Somalia’s Puntland, an activist said, a rare confirmed death in the country with the world’s highest rate of the practice.

Hawa Aden Mohamed, a FMG who campaigner, said the girls, whose names identified as Aasiyo Abdi Warsame, 10, and her sister, Khadijo, 11, died a day after being taken to a traditional circumciser in a remote village of Arawda in Puntland State

The girls’ deaths come as Somalia pursues its first FGM-related prosecution. The case was prompted by the death of 10-year-old girl two months ago.

In Somalia, 98% of women and girls between the ages of 15 and 49 have been cut, the highest rate anywhere in the world, according to the UN Children’s Fund.
