Somalia’s President Mohammed Abdullahi Mohammed Farmajo and his delegation have arrived in Asmara on Saturday for a three-day official visit to Eritrea.

The President Farmajo was warmly welcomed with red-carpet and flowers by
Eritrean President, Isaias Afwerki and its people at the airport in the capital of Asmara.

President Mohammed is accompanied by Ministers of Information, Transport; Construction; & State Minister at Foreign Ministry.

The President was escorted and being taken into Presidentail Palace where he and his Eritrean counterpart have already held a Summit.

The Somali President Mohammed is set to visit development sites during his brief sojourn in Eritrea, according to Eritrea’s
Minister of Information, Yemane G. Meskel.

The two nations have not had diplomatic relations for nearly 15 years.

The visit by Somalia’s leader follows a stunning diplomatic thaw in recent weeks between Eritrea and Ethiopia after more than two decades.

Eritrea remains under United Nations sanctions after alleged support for the Somalia-based al-Shabab extremist group, which continues to hold rural parts of Somalia and carry out high-profile attacks in the capital, Mogadishu.

Eritrea has however denied supporting armed groups such as al-Shabab but Somalia has viewed the country with suspicion.
