Heavy fighting broke out between Somali army forces and Al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab fighters in Qoryoley town.
The fighting flared up after militants armed with RPGs, machine-guns and grenades attacked on bases manned by Somali military forces.
Two soldiers were reportedly killed in the gun battle, a witness said.
He says several other soldiers were also injured in the clash.
Neither Somali military nor Al Shabaab has commented on the latest clash in southwest of Somalia.
