Somalia: Retired army general shot dead by gunmen near Mogadishu

MOGADISHU, Somalia – Retired military general of Somali army forces and his driver have been shot dead by gunmen in Afgoye town, about 30km south of the capital city of Mogadishu.

The deceased, whose name has been released as Gudle Mohamed Nur was gunned down by men armed with pistols in the town, a witness said.

He says Nur had turned into farmer after his retirement.

The assassination was immediately claimed by Al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab group through its Radio Andulus.

The group says its assassins had killed a senior Somali Intellegence officer in Afgoye town.

The group’s fightera reportedly tried to kidnap him but he was shot dead, when he refused to follow their orders, a security officer, who asked to be unnamed said.

Somali security forces arrived at the crime scene shortly after the killers escaped.

The security forces launched an operation in parts of the town to hunt down the culprits.
