US issues new travel warning against Somalia

The US Department of State has warned its citizens against travelling to Somalia in fear of fresh attacks by Al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab.

U.S. citizens were warned to avoid travel to Somalia because of violent crime, such as kidnapping and murder, is common throughout Somalia.

The travel advisory released cites the presence of Al-Shabaab as the main concern and extends to all parts of Somalia including Somaliland and Puntland. roadblocks are also widespread

U.S says Al Shabaab fighters continue to plot kidnappings, bombings, and other attacks in Somalia.

“The Al Shabaab may conduct attacks with little or no warning, targeting airports and seaports, government buildings, hotels, restaurants, shopping areas, and other areas”, statement reads.

“Pirates are active in the waters off the Horn of Africa, especially in the international waters near Somalia”.

The U.S. government has limited ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in Somalia due to the lack of permanent consular presence in Somalia.
