Somali leaders attend Eid Al Fitr prayers in Mogadishu

MOGADISHU – Somali leaders have attended Eid prayers at mosque in Mogadishu, amid Muslims around the world are celebrating the three-day Eid al-Fitr festival, which marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan.

The Somali president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo and his premier Hassan Ali Khaire and other thousands of people joined Eid prayers at Isbaheysiga mosque in the capital Mogadishu.

All roads leading to the mosque were packed and parking spaces were at a premium, while hundreds of police and security soldiers were deployed ahead of the prayers, a policeman Mohamed Hussein said.

After the prayer, Somali president Mohamed congratulated everyone after a successful Ramadan and urged people to enjoy Eid with their families and relatives, while also sharing their joy with the destitute.

Mohamed called for working with security agencies to prevent attacks by Al Shabaab in Mogadishu.

“The group of Al Shabaab is the enemy of the overall security in Somali capital. They are familiar with explosions and targeting civilian crowds”, Mohamed said.

Meanwhile, large Eid celebrations were also held earlier on Friday in towns held by Al Shabaab in south of Somalia.

Thousands of people, including women, men and children have gathered to pray Eid prayers at squares in Jilib and Sakow towns held by Al Shabaab.

The group’s commanders and fighters also attended the prayers in those towns.
