Somalia marks the 45th anniversary of Somali press

Somalia on Sunday commemorated 45th anniversary of Somali press amidst world media watchdog called for a stop to threats to journalists in Somalia.

The event held in Mogadishu was aimed at not only to celebrate freedom Somali media but also scribes who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

Somali deputy prime minister, Mahdi Mohamed Guled, the former Somali information minister, Abdirahman Abdirahman Omar Osman, acting Information Minister, Abdirahman Idaan Yonis, leaders of National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) and other officials have attended the ceremony.

The deputy prime minister congratulated Somali journalists and urged them to double the efforts to serve the nation.

Speaking at the ceremony, acting information minister also commended the work of Somali journalists confirming that his ministry is committed to upgrading the skills of reporters.

The event comes on the heels of an International FederationJournalists  (IFJ) released a report accusing Somali government particularly Information of Ministry of “engineering” unwarranted attacks against journalists.

Earlier this month, the breakaway Somaliland slapped two journalists with two years in prison for what it termed “spreading propaganda against nation (Somaliland), degrading the nation and distracting national flag and symbol of a foreign country.

Meanwhile, a tripartite deal on skill training journalists was today inked by between Somali Information, Somali Public University and NUSOJ.
