The attack took place as officers, including reservists, regular police and administration police, patrolled the risky stretch before they were ambushed by militants. U.S. forces in Somalia have conducted a strike against a bomb-laden vehicle that was going to be used against civilians in Mogadishu, the USA military’s Africa Command said Wednesday. Five Kenyan policemen were killed in an attack on their vehicle in the northeast county of Mandera near the border with Somalia, a government official in the area said on Wednesday. Nation established that the lorry that was burnt was the one the GSU officers were in. Bundotich said the first attack targeted a group of Administration police officers who were on patrol where two officers and three reservists were killed. Hassan Nor Mohamed, Deputy Governor of Lower Shabelle region for Security Affairs, confirmed the attack, saying the vehicle was completely destroyed and the suspected militant died on the spot. He added that another team was being assembled to respond to the two attacks. Al Shabaab militants have killed five security officers in Mandera. Buses on the Mandera-Nairobi route have since switched to Marsabit-Moyale road, which is considered safer. The attack comes less than a week after the militants attacked and burnt two police stations in Garissa county in northern Kenya.
