Having recently joined EU NAVFOR Spanish Warship, ESPS Patiño, conducted an inaugural port visit to Dar es Salaam in Tanzania.

On 7th and 8th December the crew and embarked Spanish Marines took the opportunity to work with members of the Tanzanian Armed Forces to enhance the skills of this regional partner in the Western Indian Ocean. Ongoing cooperation and coordination in the work against piracy remains a vital element as maritime capacity and capability is grown with each visit and training delivered.

The training included ship searching drills which are used when looking for armed pirates aboard a vessel, basic first aid evacuation procedures along with firefighting and damage control techniques. These topics are an essential requirement for every embarked personnel on a ship.

On completion of the training, the members of the Tanzania Armed Forces received certificates of proficiency for their efforts and showed their gratitude to the sailors and marines of ESPS Patiño.

EU NAVFOR’s warships continue their presence in the Gulf of Aden and the Western Indian Ocean working with key partners and sister EU missions like EU CAP Somalia and EU Training Mission to enhance regional maritime capabilities and build on recent counter-piracy successes.
