UPDATE: Somalia, AU troops capture near Marka town

MOGADISHU – Somali troops, along with African Union forces launched operation against Al Shabaab militants near Marka town, some 190km southwest of Mogadishu.

The coalition forces re-captured Abikarow area near the town from Al Shabaab, following joint military operation, army chief, Hassan Mohamed said.

Col. Mohamed says the allied forces took control of the area, adding that the joint military operation would continue until the group’s militants are driven out of near Marka town.

“We have successfully taken control of Abikarow village from the Al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab group. The group used this area to launch attacks on the town”, he said.

“This operation is meant to eradicate the group’s militants in Lower Shabelle region”, Mohamed said.

There was no response from Al Shabaab over the claims made by Somali army officials in Marka town.
