Kenyan Security agencies have been placed on high alert in areas near its border with Somalia following intelligence that al-Shabaab is planning attacks in the country.

According to Mohamud Saleh, the Northeastern regional coordinator, the terror group is plotting attacks in Mandera and Lamu counties where the group can have an access easily.
Multiple sources within Anti-Terrorism Police Unit and National Intelligence Service confirmed the plot saying the group sent some of its fighters to areas in Somalia near Kenya’s border to carry out terrorist attacks to cause fear among the citizens..
“The Kenyan forces will enhance security patrols along the border with Somalia to prevent incursions of the militants.” Mr. Saleh said.
Mr. Saleh told residents to be vigilant as he said the government will deploy troops to beef up the security of border towns and locations.
He linked the militant group’s plan to the ongoing military operation in the southern Somalia regions to flush out the al-Qaeda-affiliate group by Somalia army backed by the African Union and U.S forces.
“The militants always have a plan to try to implement when pressure is inserted on them inside Somalia,” Saleh noted “They are weakened after Somali forces launched counteroffensive operations against them.”
The Kenyan police earlier alerted that al-Shabaab fighters pressured by Somalia military was dispersing to different areas to get safe hide out and therefore they were trying to cross the porous border to Kenya.
Al-Shabaab has carried out retaliation attacks in Northeastern and Coast regions since Kenya sent its troops to Somalia in October 2011.
Early this month, the militants attacked police vehicles escorting passenger bus between Borehole and Dhabacity villages in Mandera county.
The attack robbed lives of twelve police officers and two police Land-Cruisers were destroyed.
