Somalia: Deadly clash kills 8 people in Mogadishu

MOGADISHU – At least 8 people have been killed and several others injured when government troops exchanged heavy gunfire in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu.

Saturday’s gunfight flared up in the city’s Daynile district, after security forces tried to disarm several military soldiers, according to policeman Hassan Mohamed.

Mohamed says the clash killed at least 8 people, including five government soldiers, adding that several others injured and being taken into hospital.

“Earlier today, Somali security forces clashed with military soldiers after military forces refused to lay their arms to the security. The clash killed 3 civilians and 5 soldiers from both sides”, he said.

The fighting subsided when senior government officials intervened both warning sides, according to policeman Haasan Mohamed.

Somalia’s National Army commander, Gen. Irfid told journalists that all military forces would be re-deployed into army bases in south of Somalia.

The situation returns back to normal as local residents started to resume their daily life activities in the capital of Mogadishu.
